God sure seems to like
using water when dealing with human beings.
In the Great Flood of Genesis, God drowned all sinful mankind in water, sparing only the righteous---Noah and his family.
Would it be “too Lutheran”
to say that God used water and the power of his Word to cleanse the earth of
sin?
The children of Israel
fled Egypt to follow their God. He
brought them through the waters of the Red
Sea to save them. Would it be too
Lutheran to say that God saved his people by the power of his Word using water?
Naaman of Syria was told
to dip seven times into the Jordan River
to be healed of leprosy. He obeyed God’s
command and was healed. Would it be too
Lutheran to say that Naaman was healed by the power of God’s Word using water?
John the Baptist used
water to preach the repentance of sins.
Would it be too Lutheran to say that God brought forgiveness of sins by
the baptism of John through the power of His Word and with water?
Our
Lord Jesus Christ commanded his disciples to go into all the world and preach
the Gospel, baptizing in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
