Naaman was told by the prophet to go and dip in the River Jordan seven times to be healed of his sickness. Naaman was not happy at all about having to dip himself into the muddy Jordan, but he did as God said and he was healed. Was there something magical in the waters of the Jordan that healed him? No, but God chose to use water to demonstrate the healing, cleansing power of his almighty Word.
So too in baptism. There is nothing magical in the water of the baptismal font that mysteriously cures the sinful, sickened soul of the sinner who "dips" himself into those waters, but it is the power of the Word that uses the water to heal and cleanse us from sin. Acts 2:38, Acts 22:16:
A confessional (orthodox) Lutheran Christian's personal reflections on his faith growing up in the Baptist and evangelical branch of Christianity, in comparison to his faith and beliefs now as a Lutheran. The purpose of this blog is to share Lutheranism in Baptist and evangelical language. (I also occasionally comment on current political and social issues.) If you are interested in becoming a follower of Jesus Christ, this blog will tell you how: Believe, repent, be baptized.
