A Fundamentalist Christian Pastor being Ridiculous

Yesterday I commented on a conservative Christian pastor’s blog under his post about atheists.  I mentioned my belief that the evidence for the Christian supernatural assertions in the New Testament are very weak, one being that the authors of the Gospels wrote anonymously.  Here is his reply:

Pastor Eric said…

Sorry, Gary. You said the gospels cannot be trusted because the authors do not identify themselves and yet you have no blogger profile. Your comments don’t get published here (or even read until I have your full name, address. telephone number, social security number, mother’s maiden name, complete work history, educational transcripts, a recent photo, and two personal references that are not relatives.

My response (which he says he will not publish):

You are being silly, Pastor.  You accuse us of not wanting to look at your evidence, but you won’t even listen to ours.

Would you believe the claim that a man rose from the dead 100 years ago, based on the following evidence:

1.  Four anonymous books, written 40 years after the alleged event, two of which contain very high percentages of the word for word content of the first book
2.  The statement of a man who says that he saw the dead man after his resurrection, but very specifically states that he saw the dead man “in a heavenly vision”?

I will bet that you would laugh at such evidence for my 100 year old resurrection story, but you believe the same evidence for your 2,000 year old resurrection story.  Why?

Answer:  Because you want to!

  1. Of course . . .

You cannot be thought of as being ridiculous, because . . .

    You are always right.

That's a heavy burden to lifet, but someone has to do it.

    Thanks.

  2. The Real jb here –

Geez, Gary, I am pretty sure anyone who has ever visited your site knows who I am and what I have done (although you do not), and that I am retired.

Why is that an issue with you?

A few folks are having fun at your expense, and your hide is so very thin.

You don't seem very confident, my man. But then again, your own words say that.

Dr. Reluctant, DO . . . Seems to fit you well.

Amateur sleuth in theology, cosmology, biology, physics, paleontology, et. al.

Did I miss one of your specialties, good Doctor?

By gosh and by golly, you ought to be smart enough after all this time to tell when the REAL jb posts to your site.

Sorry for over-estimating you, but just so you are sure – this time, you have the bona-fide article!

And you are not retired – like that made an ounce of difference. You're straining your milk, Gary. Chill out, Dude. Why are you so unhappy having found “the truth???”

  3. Cute, as always, Gary . . .

Blame anything but your silly words for the responses you get.

No grudges, no slams . . . you fell out of faith, and it's my fault, or that of my “cocktail?”

You really need to read what you write, Dude.

    Really.

  4. ? You had nothing to do with me abandoning Christianity, JB. It was the lack of evidence, plain and simple.

So if you feel I personally attacked you, I apologize. Let's discuss the issues and not attack each other. Deal?

  5. Gary –

It is not a matter of “felt emotions.” I would not still try to talk with you if I felt offended to such a degree as to believe you attacked me.

You have employed ad hominem to a great degree, despite your many presentations of what you perceive as fact in your various videos and quotes from others.

I have had many contrary arguments that you have simply discounted, or verbally discredited, because they did not agree with your new-found “non-faith.”

Gary – you once agreed and even commended my words when I told you the Resurrection was an Article of the Christian Faith. It is also, for the record, a matter of history, which can neither be proven nor dis-proven, try as you might.

I simply am at odds with your many anecdotal evidences against the One Holy Faith, and I am not beholden to you to prove anything.

You disbelieve. That is your call.

I believe. That is my call.

A rational man walks away from that understanding of matters with no argument.

You refuse to walk away without everyone agreeing you are right.

Sorry, my friend (and you are, despite you thinking otherwise), you don't get it your way.

    FACT of the matter.

Peace in Christ to you, Gary. I meant it the first time I said it to you, as much as I mean it this time.
